Most people like to start their day with a cup of steaming hot tea or coffee, which has become more of a ritual over time. However, scientists believe that this behaviour may be doing more damage than good to your body.
According to Dr. Rohini Patil, nutritionist and CEO of Nutracy Lifestyle, while tea is the ideal comfort drink, drinking it on an empty stomach every morning may irritate your stomach or stimulate stomach acids, wreaking havoc on your digestion. But how exactly?
Drink Water Before Tea Or Coffee
"Morning tea can impact the washing out of microorganisms from your mouth to your stomach, which can alter your metabolism and create indigestion and heartburn," explained the specialist. Dr. Karishma Shah agreed, explaining that caffeine, as a diuretic, can promote dehydration, and that drinking a glass of water before your morning coffee can be quite beneficial.
"Because tea and coffee have PH values of 4 and 5, respectively, they might create acidity." "However, taking a glass of room temperature water before drinking these beverages would help reduce the acid production," Dr Garima Goyal, a nutritionist, adding that "without this, you may be at danger of suffering heart burns or ulcers in the long term."
Empty Stomach?
Dr Ruchika Jain, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj, agreed, adding that drinking water first thing in the morning is also vital because the body gets dehydrated after sleeping.
"Water drank early in the morning reduces the likelihood of heartburn, acidity, and headaches by rehydrating the body," she explained, adding that it also helps individuals suffering from "constipation by cleansing the stomach and assisting in bowel movement."
