Coffee can lessen the severity of diabetics' fatty liver disease, according to a study.

Caffeine, polyphenols, and other natural products found in coffee may help reduce the severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among overweight people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) NAFLD is a collective term for liver disorders caused by a build-up of fat in the liver.

In overweight adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), caffeine, polyphenols, and other naturally occurring substances in coffee may help lessen the severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The term NAFLD refers to a group of liver conditions brought on by an accumulation of fat in the liver. These can cause liver fibrosis, which can develop into cirrhosis (liver scarring) and liver cancer, by a study from the University of Coimbra in Portugal.

NAFLD is mainly brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle with minimal exercise and a high-calorie diet, not by excessive alcohol consumption. However, according to John Griffith Jones, PhD, Senior Researcher at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, “changes in modern diet and lifestyle are causing an increase in obesity rates and incidence of both T2D and NAFLD, which can ultimately develop into more severe and irreversible conditions, burdening healthcare systems.”

He continued, “Our study is the first to find an association between greater cumulative levels of caffeine and non-caffeine metabolites in urine and lower severity of NAFLD in overweight adults with T2D. In addition, participants in the study who drank more coffee had healthier livers. Still, those who drank more caffeine had a decreased risk of developing liver fibrosis, while those who drank more non-caffeinated coffee ingredients had lower fatty liver index scores.

According to the study, persons with type 2 diabetes who are overweight may have less severe NAFLD if they drink more coffee. The study also noted that other coffee constituents, such as polyphenols, lessen liver oxidative stress, lowering fibrosis incidence and enhancing glucose homeostasis in healthy and overweight patients.
